Description
DETAILSSilicon Bronze is a copper based filler metal primarily used for MIG, TIG and oxyacetylene welding of copper, copper-silicon and copper-zinc base metals to themselves and to steel. Silicon bronze can be used on plain or galvanized steel sheet metal. It can also be used for surfacing areas subjected to corrosion.
Used for brazing, the low melting points makes this filler rod perfect for joining thin sheet metal or galvanized steel; you can even braze dissimilar metals like copper to steel, which is very popular for artwork and sculptures. In fact you can join steel, copper, bronze, cast iron or brass using a silicon bronze rod while brazing with your TIG.
Brazing with a TIG is usually done with DC polarity but can also be welded with AC. If you want to braze metals and thought you were going to have to also buy an expensive gas torch set up, using this rod allows you to use your TIG machine and get incredible results.
How To Select Filler Rod
The thickness of the metal being welded will determine the diameter of the rod.
045”
diameter filler rod for thin sheet metal
1/16”
diameter filler rod for welding metal 1/8” thick or less
3/32”
diameter filler rod for welding metals thicker than 1/8”.
Match the alloy you’ll be welding to the filler rod. Here are some common applications:
ER70S-2
– Mild steel and 4130 chrome moly tubing
4043
– Aluminum
ER308L
– Stainless Steel
Silicon Bronze
– Used for brazing and even combining dissimilar metals like copper to steel
It’s usually a great idea to have a tube of a few kinds available because you never know what kinds of projects you’re going to run into. Plus our filler rods come in convenient tubes that allow you to easily open and close to keep your filler rods clean and free of contaminants.

FILLER ROD INFORMATION
4043
- The most versatile aluminum filler rod and can be used for most applications including 3003, 6061 and a355 aluminum castings.
ER70S-2
– The most popular and versatile rod used for welding 4130 chrome moly tubing as well as all mild steel and even cast steel. The main reason for its popularity is because it produces high quality welds, even when the metal is dirty, oily or even rusty. It provides x-ray quality welds with no porosity while having the highest tensile strength of all plan carbon steel filler rods. It is high in manganese and silicon and this chemistry increases the fluidity of the weld puddle, creating a better bead and less grinding.
ER308L
– The rod you need for welding stainless steel. Make sure you have a couple tubes of this on your cart because even if you think all your welding will be mild steel or aluminum, when a stainless project arises, you will want to match the metal with stainless rods for the best quality and longest lasting welds.
Silicon Bronze
– Used for brazing, the low melting points makes this filler rod perfect for joining thin sheet metal or galvanized steel; you can even braze dissimilar metals like copper to steel, which is very popular for artwork and sculptures.
