Description
Vintage Contintental-sized (approx. 4x6") postcard with a view of the ruins ofMellifont Abbey in County Louth, Ireland, midway between Belfast and Dublin.

Front caption reads, "Mellifont Abbey, Co. Louth, Ireland."
Back caption reads,
"MELLIFONT ABBEY, CO. LOUTH: These ruins of the first Cistercian
House in Ireland are situated beside the Mattock River, a tributary of the Boyne,
6 miles west of Drogheda. The Abbey was built in 1142, consecrated in 1157 and was a
seat of religious learning until suppressed in 1539. The remains of the Gate House form a
huge square tower rising to about 50 feet. There are only the outlines of cloisters
but other considerable portions of the old Abbey still stand."
